    Extract from Strabane District Council

Moor Lough provides one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the natural landscape of the Sperrins. Once a source of water for Strabane canal , this upland lake it is now something of a game angler’s paradise, while the shoreline offers a delightful walking circuit.

There are numerous local legends which tell of Nion Rua, variously described as a banshee, and sometimes appearing as a grey hooded figure or old hag. She was said to be the daughter of a Chieftain who drowned crossing a ford on the River Foyle while going to visit her lover near Glenmornan at Moor Lough.

The Moor Lough Shore is a well-known and much-recorded traditional Irish love song. Over the years, the song has been recorded by many musicians, including The Boys of the Lough, Dolores Keane, The Corrs and Sinéad O’Connor. It is thought to have been written by a local Strabane poet, by the name of Devine, and it first appears in print in 1886.
